Uxbridge Gallery, Howick, Auckland -
August 3 through August 21

View Clay Bodvin's AGG Portfolio

“Still Life Landscape II, Indoor Bowls”, 2006
(photomedia painting; inkjet on 90cm sq canvas, featured on Uxbridge website)

This invitation-only exhibition and exciting mixed-media show is being curated by Sarah Clacher, Exhibition and Programme Manager at Uxbridge. Stirring will bring together the work of established artists from photography, painting, jewellery, cast glass, ceramics and sculpture.

Featuring Tina Bellemy, Clay Bodvin, Pat Bonnette, Richard Boyd Dunlop, Praumuan Burusphat, Don Campbell, Evelyn Dunstan, Kathie Hewitt, Sean Kerrigan, Hal Martin, Carolyn McCondash, Xun Mu, Penny Stotter, Jeff Thompson, Rae Thompson and Gae Webster. Stirring aims to celebrate the diversity of artistic responses by asking these artists to explore

            • the cultural and historical uses and meanings of the spoon, and
            • the influence of living in New Zealand, as part of their creative inspiration.

Take, for example, Clay Bodvin (a long-time Waitakere City resident and artist). His submission of two pieces reference a style/genre known as serial painting - which exploits the repetition of shapes, grids and patterns of colour.

Using this compositional device, Bodvin's work features the bowls of different spoons and comments on the spoon’s connection to different social structures and activities.

The excitement will lie in experiencing the various and many interpretations of this most common household item, which is familiar to us all. Spoons...we use them almost everyday...but be prepared to see them in a new light.

An evening preview of Stirring will be held on August 2, at 6pm, while the exhibition will open on August 3 and run through to August 21.
