Rome, Italy - Well known English artist Jonathan Hynd said of Gigi Cau, "Now this is an artist who knows what he is doing!" and with this awarded Cau First Place in the TOPTEN JUST PAINT 2009, International Art Competition.
Gigi Cau paints boldly. His colors are more than brillant and saturated, they are materially present. They intice the viewer to go beyond only conceptual and intellectual considerations, to actually feel the form, the solidity, feel the painting.
Cau uses this strength in color to create movement in his works. They are not stagnant, but rather a continuous passage of sensations, as if the world is not such a stable place and the ground under our feet is not so solid. |
This perception creates an initial uneasiness but the boldness of his colors speak of a innate joy within that accepted uneasiness. Playing with the pain of impermanence, the difficulties of life but also offering a space to search for and let go into the joy of it all. This is clearly evident in his recently sold work,"The Soul's Inabiilty to Comunicate".
From the pleasurable moments of painting as a young boy in his mother's cellar, to the great influence of Chagall and Munch, Gigi Cau has been pushed by an artistic passion to explore and share the manifestations of pure emotion which has lead him to experience an opening toward something that goes beyond.
Isabella Convertino, Art Critic fom the Galleria Modigliani Milano writes "Gigi Cau expresses the desire to explore, through form and color, the subjective world, using lightly deformed bodies and exagerated tones. These rappresentations appear very suggestive and rich with content, assuming a simbolic character. We can observe this in the constant presence of colorful faces, elaborated with fantasy from a grafic point of view. This has become an unmistakeable sign of the works of Gigi Cau, defining his unique character and style."
