Tanya Kingston

“All the world’s a stage and all of the men and women merely players…”
    W. Shakespeare A Midsummer Nights Dream

The works in ‘FIGURE IN SPACE’ are primarily the result from observing, sketching, photographing and recording figures in urban spaces, which are then composed, organised and imagined into compositional images that isolate the figures in their interaction within the space they inhabit.

The metaphor of the stage is appropriate to ‘frame’ a moment in time and stop the action at a point where we can understand the poetic interpretation of the figure and its relationship to the surrounding space.

Shadows give direction and add mystery. Both charcoal and finished paintings are the result of a year and a half research and work. This includes four months as a resident artist from the College of Fine Arts, University of NSW, spent at the Cite des Art Internationale in Paris in 1997.

'When we invest our visual reality with the perception of our dreams, as observers or voyeurs, we glimpse ‘moments in time’ from altered viewpoints.'

With these particular works I owe a debt of gratitude to those contemporary masters who have influenced me greatly, such as: Balthus, Paul Delveau and Edward Hopper.

Gallery Comment : Tanya Kingston paints space. She fills the canvas with space. Space to move within. In the "Figure" series, the viewer co-inhabits the environment and feels the presence. In the series of views from an airplane the space is grandiose and expansive. Brushstrokes represent vast areas of Earth, intersecting lines represent boundaries and delicate shadows evoke deep perspectives. The large scale of the oil on canvas paintings enhances the sensations of looking down from above. Mature works. (dg)
