Sturla Strand
photography / Norway

Since the age of twelve I have been taking photographs, first as an avid amateur, but the last five years I have been doing it professionally. I am self-taught. Currently I am working both digitally and with medium- and 35mm cameras. Although I shoot both color and black and white, I have a preference for the classic black and white photograph. When it comes to the subjects I choose to photograph, I have found that certain places have a special kind of attraction to me. The majority of my motifs are found near my hometown Son in Norway. This area is well suited for photography, close to the sea and with the nature within walking distance of the town center. I have always been fascinated by capturing the sea, clouds, different objects and trees under different lightning conditions.

I prefer motifs with few elements, atmosphere and tranquillity. Simplicity is therefore a keyword in my art. I am constantly trying to find places with a potensial for great photography.  Under changing lighting conditions even the most mundane things and places will give good images. I like to capture the beauty of the world around me without the use of cliches. Nothing gives me more joy and satisfaction than getting my vision fulfilled.

Previously all my black and white photographs were printed in the traditional darkroom. Now I scan medium format negatives and make the necessary tonal adjustments and sharpening in Photoshop. As little manipulating as possible is carried out, not more than would have been obtained in the darkroom. This method gives much greater control in terms of shadow and highlight control. The images are finally printed on different kinds of archival fine art paper. The quality of these prints have surpassed or at least equal the prints from the darkroom. A few of my photographs are taken with a digital camera  and a 35mm camera.

Gallery Comment :
Photographer Sturla Strand tends toward a minimalist ethic, much in keeping with many Norwegian artists. A straight-forward, honest depiction of his subject matter, with no attempt to make it appear to be more than it is or infuse more meaning than what is represented. No tricks, no frills. A restrained eye for a calm, natural, unembellished beauty. The square format in black and white also reinforces this approach. The featured Artwork "SeaMist Norway" is a brilliant example. (dg)
