Born in Palma de Majorca in 1948 Simon Matheu grew up surrounded by unspoiled nature, bright colours,the sea and sun. Before he even could speak he felt the need to express himself through drawing landscapes, beaches, and people. Simon Matheu, spent many hours painting with his father, a portrait and landscape painter. Having a natural talent for drawing, he took part in various drawing contests and worked on pamphlets and magazines at school.

In 1966 Simon moved to Barcelona where he began to create works influenced by the last period of Picasso, the Barcelona scene and the trends, creations and anxieties of the sixties.

Besides different techniques such as drawing with pencil, watercolors, collage, gouaches and oil paintings he has also worked with iron, wood, and stone creating sculpture.

In 2004 he started experimenting with acrylics creating a special effect he calls 'acrylic spotting'. This technique, he now uses indiscriminately, when realizing figurative, expressionist or abstract paintings. It gives texture, contrast and vivid and bright colors to all his creations.

Dr. Carlos Gonzalez, art critic of the Real Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, describes this 'spotting' as a new and different technique whose bright colors and textures recalls to the colorful mosaics of Catalan modernism.

Some of Simon's works, commissioned or simply made to express impressions, can be found in different parts of the world: like Buenos Aires, The Hague, Leiden, Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia and Palma de Majorca.
