Nella Lush
painting / USA

Born in Italy, I was raised and educated in the region of Puglia on the south-east Adriatic coast. Before my marriage to Steven, I studied art history and foreign languages.

We then traveled throughout Europe and settled in Spain with our three children. At that time, I did not realize how much my life-style would influence my art. Even though my priorities were with my husband and children, I painted at every available opportunity. Deep down I knew that, one day, a change in circumstances would allow me to reorganize my artistic priorities.

Who would have thought that the internet would facilitate the transition by allowing me to showcase my art to the world? I knew that my work would have to undergo a series of experiments and changes before I could finally set myself free from traditional rules and constraints while opening up new avenues in which my soul might also find new scope for creative self-expression.

My paintings are fueled by my emotions and I feel that each piece tells its own story. Sometimes, at the outset, I am not sure what will develop. However, through the painting process, the true image begins to emerge. I particularly love that moment when, totally absorbed in my work, I know I have the potential to create something worthwhile.

Some critics refer to my art as "Roman Revival". I have indeed always been attracted to ancient ruins, stone work, frescoes, Renaissance and mediaeval art. I like to add texture to my paintings while encouraging the viewer to discover what lies beneath the surface plane.

I am still uncertain as to how I would define my art. What I do know is that it is a genuine reflection of me in the here and now. My work is still evolving while always remaining true to myself and welcoming new challenges.

Gallery Comment:

There's a built-in age factor; an ancient quality in the works of Nella Lush, maybe even a timelessness, that is expressed by the scumbled colors, the classic subject matter and the texture and patina of the surface. The carefully controlled modeling and blending, which is never over-done, builds the history of the painting and gives it a subdued depth and suffused atmosphere that is sensually appealing. (dg)
