Magnolia Rivera
painter / Mexico

I have painted portraits since I was very young. And many of these portraits were children. Children are wonderful models because they are very honest in their attitudes and they are the perfect symbol of life.
In my country of Mexico I like to travel to cities and towns watching those luminous faces, admiring the colorful typical dresses or – mainly - the depth of those eyes. Yes, the eyes are the mirror of the soul and they reflect the purity of childhood.
I paint in a realistic technique, sometimes alla prima, in a spontaneous way to capture the natural gesture of a child, or sometimes through the “velature” technique, superposing thin layers of color, studying the texture, the surface, the secret color of a skin.
I like to work on canvas, wood, metal or papel, on big, medium or small spaces. I create paintings with the same care as I create drawings. For paintings, I enjoy working with oil, or acrylic or mix. For drawings, I work with pastels, charcoal, ink, watercolor, graphite or other media. Each material for creating has its own value.
When I paint or draw a portrait, I know I’m expressing my vision of life. When I created one of my last series, Once Upon A Time, Portraits of Children in Mexico, I spent three years travelling through my country, rediscovering the beauty of those little faces. From here, these portraits of children want to be a message of hope, a song of peace, a poem for the world.
Gallery Comment :
Magnolia Rivera expresses the innocence of youth in realistic portraits in many different media. She has mastered the technique of realizing the many tonalities of skin by layering and placing transparant color over color, which gives a depth that can almost be felt. A pride for her native country of Mexico is also evident in this great collection of portraits.
