Ian Laws - USA
painter

In my work I am hoping to visually convey my personal struggle with Obssessive Compulsive Disorder and other problems that marginalize and isolate not only myself but so many others.

My hope is that as a visual voice for myself and those outside the boundaries of what is seen to be "normality", within the narrow definitions afforded by society, I will be able to reach a larger audience with my images and through them a way of finding a feeling of inclusion for myself and others who are marginalized within the world in which we all live.

My working method is a fusion of acrylic painting on canvas and digital manipulation. This affords me the working tools to bend, distort, and shape images to bring to light many of the feelings within myself. These feelings are guided by my illness, medication and again the way in which society sees me.

I have modelled my work around images of myself and I am stripping away layers to reveal raw nerve endings as if to show the layers of emotion that are involved in living on the fringes of this life.

My works are available as original works on canvas or as digital prints.

Gallery Comment:

The digital works of Laws become therapeutic instruments for the examination of the psyche. Rich and deeply saturated, the images are seen and not seen, as if they are not willing to reveal all. We know we are inside, somewhere deep inside, looking further within. His pieces become a strong documentation of this journey.
