Gaye Spencer
painter / Australia

Human emotions, life scenarios, expectations, disappointments, and paths taken are aspects being explored through the human experience.

The objective is for the spectator to be able to create a personal link with a painting and see themselves as potential characters within the environment presented.
Viewers are open to their own individual interpretations. Perhaps they could see themselves or someone else in the same place. The sense of space and place is a focus. However, the meaning and intent is open to individual perception.

Jeorg Andersch of "The Mercury" wrote about her:
Two facts are outstanding: the display of excellent brush technique, in some instances almost to the level of airbrush application; the other is Spencer’s ability to imbue great sensuality into her work, coupled with excellent figure drawing skills. It is obvious that her work is of more then passing interest, as some of it is disappearing overseas rather rapidly…

Gaye Spencer has re-emerged, offering a new perception of the world around her.

Working with a series of images like taken from film runs as stills, she has created a series of paintings dealing with enclosed space and people within them. In a curious way it is almost distilling the ambience within these rooms, engendering a speculative notion from the viewer who is coerced into constructing a setting without knowing the slightest detail.

It’s a funny little game, especially if the artist also disregards broader background knowledge but uses their skill to influence the picture through colour and pose.

Gallery Comment :
Gaye Spencer is an artist who has the ability to convey a very particular sensation created by miminal environments with people in what seem to be reflective moments. The viewer is immediately transported into the situation, carrying their own personal experiences and this stimulates profond emotions and an intense connection with the artwork.
