Gabriele Guenther (Gé)
Painter / Canada-Germany

Texture and colour are what count in Gabriele Guenther's world. She takes deep sensual pleasure in colours, landscapes; painting is a place of refuge for her, a meditation of sorts.

With palette knives or fingers, she attempts to recreate that whisper of a sound or movement that flits rather than gathers.

Born (Tokyo, 1955) and raised in Japan, educated at the University of Toronto (Canada), and having lived in Germany, France and the U.S., her atelier is now located in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, where she often works with “objets re-trouvés”, as she calls them, to give them new form or lend them a more diverse reason-to-be –- new roots, much in keeping with her own history.

Also a poet, her work has been widely published in Canada, the U.S., and Britain. Her audio-drama Borderline: From the Shadows of a Journey for two voices and five instruments (music by Achim Kaufmann featuring the Vancouver-based group “Talking Pictures” and db boyko – vocalist) which premiered at the Western Front in Vancouver, Canada, in June 2007 will be released on CD in late 2008.

"we get a richness
as found in the reflecting material of gold and copper
coloring. The various textual treatments add spark as well as the vertical presentation"

Gallery Comment :
Visual poetry is what we see in Gabriele's works. She interacts with the "materia", with thick impastos and sculpted gestures and sees the potential spirit residing in found objects to give them new life by converting and exalting them as art objects. (dg)
