“I have a huge imagination that is inspired
by anything that comes within my vision. I see
beauty in absolutely everything. Some of my
work is thought to be abstract but to me it
is not - it is representational of points of
perception that range from cellular to universal.
As one of my creations unfolds, it offers the
next possibility, which soon becomes another
part of my visionary cosmology. The cosmic,
visceral explosions in earlier paintings transmuted

After years of creating dense, deeply felt and

:: Cosmic pop... Donna Balma's recent
work is big, bold, pure painting. Painting that
begs to be examined, explored, interpreted.
She invents an object, and gets down to representing
it in all its intricate and contorted splendor,
making it important by surrounding it, at times,
with vibrating, gestural frames. She is compelled
to reveal it all from what seems to be the inside
out, exposing the visceral inner workings. There
is no apparent resorting to symbolic codification
here, Donna builds in detailed gestures, engaging
unexpected elements, that move the eye around
the painting, teasing and stimulating attempts
to piece together the whole. The result is a
strong, sure and mature vision. To view these
images on a computer monitor is, of course,
limited, and one can only imagine the impact
of these paintings in their actual size.
