Daniel Hanequand
painter /
Canada
A surrealist artist of true
nature, my intimate instinct is dictating me
a forthright need to express myself as freely
as possible within an urgent call for freedom
and using the visual input as the best vehicle
that permits or allows my soul to expand, delivering
my quest to counter balance “The fear
of the unknown”.
My motivation can be associated with genes that
are biologically beneficial to the source of
my creativity and it bears no explanation to
why and how it ooze-out to better deeds, again
the pursuit of discovery is probably best expressed
when it comes to nurture an overall “brain
massage” that leads me to a blissful gratification,
as well as loosing myself to oblivion!

Born in Paris in 1938, Daniel now lives in Toronto, Canada. He went to Sir George Williams University in Montreal in 1968, majoring in Fine Art, but considers himself visually self-taught. “My style was already defined by my very ‘settled’ brain. The surreal was surely the most appealing and creative way to express my feelings.” Hanequand has been exhibiting his colored pencil drawings, miniature art, and paintings since 1970.

Metamorphia Suite: (view slideshow presentation)
This new series, with earlier works, part of this on-going suite of new colored pencil drawings, has the same essence and same language of the former works, myself “possessed” by my own complicated cranium, unusually creative and in tune with the human magma of everyday life, a saga leading to the fast lane of utopia quite in accordance with my inner feeling about the world “as is” which allows to lead me to the world of farfetch responding to my need of being the contrary ,away from the mainstream of the art following my instinct, therefore satisfying myself, pursuying my artistic mission.

Artwork "War's Legacy":
A simple drawing depicting the horror of the war, already well explained by Goya, but the turbulent instability is keeping reminding us that horror perpetrated by we human doesn't stop and continue its path to hell, searching ways to thrive, impose, and to establish new identities, new territories ,new powers, eliminating, dismissing, and without pity, erasing fellow humans of the surface of the earth, forever.

Gallery Comment:
Odd awestruck humanoid faces, sometimes with bodies, sometimes without, characterize Hanequand’s work with colored pencils. Delicate chiaro scuro requiring a light sure hand able to blend tonalities of colors and forms. Seemingly improvised but controlled elements that somehow ooze into other improbable forms and build to form compelling compositions. A trained and educated eye connected to a skilled and practised hand have created these singular works.
