Dale O'Dell

photographer-digital artist / USA

THE SURREAL LANDSCAPE:
These images are part of an ongoing series of Surreal Landscapes. Because the landscape is such an extensively photographed subject I have chosen to use the ‘real’ or ‘straight’ landscape as a foundation and starting point for the creation of my own fictional places. Instead of documenting a place which is truly best experienced with all five senses, my photo-digital surreal landscapes exist outside the laws of physics, logic and normalcy. By rearranging existing natural elements (and ‘growing’ some elements directly in the computer) I can create places that I’d like to visit, yet don’t exist.

These works come to fruition by both pre- and post-visualization. Photography for me, instead of a final destination, is more a ‘mining expedition’ to collect bits and pieces for later rearrangement.

Having come to digital illustration from photography my imagery is photographically composed and contains many of the visual cues found in ‘traditional’ photography such as figure-ground composition and depth of field. Although I began creating this type of imagery long before the ‘digital revolution’ of photography the computer provides a more direct link between the image in my mind’s eye and the image on paper. ‘Digital’ is a new medium. These images could not be made without modern digital technology and they are a true hybridization of old and new technologies.

Dale O’Dell is a photographer and digital artist based in Prescott, Arizona.  His commercial imagery is published internationally and his fine-art work has been shown in over one-hundred group and solo exhibitions.

Dale received a degree in Photography in 1982 from Sam Houston State University. During his early years, Dale became familiar with virtually every photographic process and used them all at one time or another.

As one of the early adopters of digital technology, one of Dales’ early digital images made history in 1983 when it became the first wholly computer-generated image published in advertising.

In 1994 he relocated to Prescott, in central Arizona.  In 1997 a collection of his surreal black and white analog composite imagery was published as the book Human/Nature.  Dale continues to produce both digital and analog imagery today.

Gallery Comment:

Photographer and digital artist Dale O'Dell combines the two disciplines to create and construct inviting environments of magical worlds. Infinite perspectives into rooms viewed from the entrances of majestic trees and rocks, laughing leaves as they fall in primeval forests, cathedral ceilings above paths in the woods, are some of the improbable subjects he uses. Nature absurdly inhabited by man.

Seamlessly created and presented as documentation of what never was, sometimes with elements of humor expressed in the details. O'Dell uses archival inks and prints his Artworks on fine art paper.
