Angela Hennessy
Painter / U.S.A.

The main themes in my paintings are loss, isolation and alienation, safekeeping and preservation.  My work also addresses the fragility and celebration of life and relationships. These themes have developed over the years as a direct and natural consequence of my biography and reflect my deeply personal feelings and experiences.

I paint every day and so my pictures have become a record of my life. The eight years I spent in Japan have had a lasting influence on my work. All areas of traditional Japanese culture have elements of aesthetics, harmony, balance and space. My fascination with these, my love of everyday objects, Japanese and otherwise, and a parallel interest in abstract art developed into a style of painting which combined naturalistic and abstract elements. Objects became symbols. Symbols, colour and brushstrokes developed into my own, personal language.

Since living in the USA, I have travelled quite extensively and have explored, photographed and been awed by the beauty and grandeur of the landscapes of the west. Heaven and earth in those regions are beyond words but, hopefully, not beyond pictures. Driving through New Mexico, exploring Indian cliff dwellings and encountering adobe architecture “in the flesh” have also left me wondering how I can use painting to  communicate my feelings about all those magnificent landscapes and the tiny marks that humankind has made upon them.

I work mainly in oil on canvas. Oil paint is extremely versatile, allowing me to use it in many different ways, from pushing it around on the canvas straight out of the tube, to dripping and splashing it like water colour. I always work on several paintings concurrently whether I am preparing for a particular exhibition or not.

All the paintings are custom framed in plain, untreated wood, my having discovered years ago that elaborate framing just does not suit my work. I then paint the frames myself in the studio. When this is done, I consider the paintings to be completed.

Describing my work is like describing my life. All my questions, beliefs and experiences are contained in my paintings. These very often contain two different styles – abstract and naturalistic. Objects, presented in trompe l’oeil style, are seemingly fixed onto or are leaning against a background, which, apart from the shadows, could well be abstract.

Gallery Comment : Angela paints with superreal attention to detail and a reverence for common-place objects which she places against abstract scumbled fields which serve as stages for the performance of these inanimate objects. Beautifully rendered simplicity and balance. The large scale of some of the actual paintings like "Message to Sadako" and "Tools", surely enhance the artist's message and the sensations they evoke.
