Angela Hennessy
Painter / U.S.A.

Describing my work is like describing my life or making a statement about who I am. The main themes in my paintings are loss, isolation and alienation, safekeeping and preservation.  My work also addresses the fragility and celebration of life and relationships. These themes have developed over the years as a direct and natural consequence of my biography and reflect my feelings, experiences, beliefs and observations.

I have no memory of a time before wanting to paint and draw.

An idea for a painting can be triggered by an object, a phrase or song, a journey, an event or simply the desire to use a certain colour or combination of colours.

Fragility is one of the main characteristics of life. None of us knows the length or strength of our own or anyone else’s lifeline.

This means that our promises, including those to ourselves, no matter how fervently they are made, cannot always be relied on and that our carefully and enthusiastically constructed shelters of love and sincerity are vulnerable and liable to either collapse suddenly or disintegrate over time.

In life, we often persuade ourselves that we are experiencing reality although what we are seeing, feeling and hearing is often an imperfect substitute for the real thing. This can also apply to beliefs that we have about ourselves.

Since living in the USA, I have begun including references to landscapes in my work and have rediscovered a former, intense interest in portraying the human figure.

Gallery Comment :
Angela Hennessy works with great sureness and eloquence in her use of the elemental aesthetics of harmony, balance and space. Her eight years in Japan are evident in the development of a unique style. The transformation of simple objects into symbols and the use of strong brushstokes and delicate color enhance her particular artistic identity. Her ability to play these object/symbols against a contrasting background, creating a illusive effect of the objects sitting on top of the painting adds a intriguing quality to her works.

Angela is an artist that is driven to explore and this becomes evident in her new works. The investigation the human figure has become her new symbol. These works are studies of the human body as a "linguistic expression"; it's movements and positions as a form of communication. Her featured artwork below is a wonderful example of this. A visit to her website will confirm her growing interest and pursuit of this human charateristic.
