Hilary Pollock
Painter / Australia

My earliest recollection of having an interest in the visual arts, was, as a young child, saving my pocket money to buy two very small landscape prints from a gift shop in the small country town where I was born and raised.
(One of the little mysteries of life). The artist was a well known Australian indigenous painter, Albert Namatjira.
It was to be many years before I saw any original artworks.
I was the third of four girls and very shy. Maybe I escaped into pictures and drawing and a world of my own.
My art teacher at Secondary School, recognised some talent and successfully persuaded my parents to allow me to study at The National Art School in Sydney. I graduated in 1974.
It has been difficult at times, to sustain a creative output and exhibition program while attending to all the domesticity that a husband and children require. However, I have to say that as the years roll by, it becomes easier and now I have a large studio and plenty of time to be creative.
After many experiments with abstraction, I keep coming back to the human figure and enjoy incorporating patterns, shapes and design.
I have travelled widely, lived in different places and built a visual language of my own.
My inspiration comes from the observation of the human condition, a personal response to the landscape and the playfulness of abstraction, resulting in an eclectic ouvre.
Gallery Comment :
Hilary's recent works within the China Series are stupendous. The techniques mastered during previous years of research in her abstract work created a perfect base for bringing together that knowledge with her ability to integrate figures and ojbects to create a harmonious and interesting compositions.
Hilary's artistic residence in China in 2008 gave her a fantastic opportunity to explore, on a closer level, sensations of a culture that were already beginning to enter her work. The residency ended with an exhibition in which she sold all four pieces North, South, East and West.
