Gigi Cau
Painter / Italy

It is not so simple to say who I am and what the features are that characterizes me and my work.
When I was a young boy I loved to pause with my friends in my mother's small cellar and to paint, raw paintings with the oil paints. These were cheerful and peaceful moments, and I, in that atmosphere, felt to be the happiest person in the world. I still remember the intense, pungent and constant perfume of the linseed oil, and also the joy at seeing the final result of the painting with a winter landscape.
I waited for the arrival of an acquaintance of mine, who taught at the School of Art of Sassari. He systematically took the brush from my hands and, with brief and precise lines, painted faces of Sardinian women dressed in their typical costumes. In those brief instances I focused my attention on learning the brush and colour techniques.
I loved Chagall and Munch because they were free from schemes and academic techniques and they succeeded in transmitting thoughts and feelings such as joy, suffering, love, frustration, consolation and hope.
The idea to represent moments of daily life in my paintings began to develop. Instances in which the main character is Life and Hope in a new life. A second life that exists after death, a beautiful new life, where everything will be Light and Love and the suffering will be annulled by the joy. This is the reason I love to paint people that wander "searching for a new life."
They make their way in the chaos of daily life in order not to be to enslaved by the mass media. They fight not to become prey of environmental pollution.
The first step to release oneself from this tumult is not always painless. Sometimes those characters cross obligatory paths which rise up and become difficult. I like to remember, along with them, the pain that Christ suffered on the Cross. When my characters finally reach peace, everything is finished. Light prevails over darkness and life over death.

Gallery Comment :
Gigi Cau's work, past and present, seem to mix in the representation of timeless human nature. Colors dictate shape and allow faces to come out from the canvas, as feelings and questions, allowing the spectator to find himself in the drawn faces. As clearly expressed in "L'Incomunicabilità dell'Anima" human begins are alone during the course of their life, but it is this lonliness that unites all humanity.
