Bill Botten
Painter / UK

My work reflects the path my career has taken.

At the age of thirteen I was given the opportunity to go to art college but this was immediately after the second world war and grants were so meagre it was not practical. Living at home meant making a financial contribution to the household. I had to find work on leaving school at sixteen which is how art school was substituted by work as a studio boy in an advertising agency.

I went through advertising continually learning new disciplines on the art side until I was able to become a freelance designer and perforce, an illustrator.

I eventually ended up living and working in Soho, London but after three years became disillusioned with the work and life style and, at the age of 43, moved to
an apartment near Stroud, a small country town in Gloucestershire where I started to paint, although I am still asked to do commercial work and am happy to oblige.
