Juror comment ::
the light is the protagonist of the story of a man and the mystery of the place that he is leaving. |
Gallery comment ::
This is an example of a photo that would in no way benefit from the addition of color. The balance of light and dark and the placement of the subject matter enhance and exalt the narrative quality of this photo. The strip of white and greys through the middle keeps the photo from being heavy despite the solid block of black at the bottom. An extremely well-realized photo. |
Artist Statement :: I am a professional photographer working in Brisbane, Australia and have been active in photography for over thirty years. Although I’m involved professionally in many different fields of photography I see my black & white fine art work as a deeply personal expression of my own world and the things that are important to me. It has always been “straight photography” that uses the real world to express the emotional content of daily life. Although I do work in the digital domain the photographs here were all photographed on film and can be printed either as silver gelatine prints or digital ones. Of course, the method of production is not of great importance considering the communicative power of the photographic image. The ability of the black & white photograph to convey emotion has always attracted me to the medium and whatever technology offers in the future I’m sure the language of black & white photography will remain.
