Cleo Wilkinson / New Zealand

Wilkinson is one of the a few artists working today in the mezzotint printmaking technique. She has taken this complex delicate and most physically demanding of all art forms to great heights and diversity.

Each image shows a great range of tones and depth of color which is only obtained through painstaking burnishing of the plate and many trial printings. She has designed a unique handcrafted roulette to grind the plate which creates a rare stippled texture to the images.

"My interest lies in the power to evoke disquieting and elusive moments with subtle nuances of light that the richness of the mezzotint can uncover.

I am an explorer of twilight zones and ambiguous spaces. Much of my recent work explores ambivalence - suspended - the struggle with insight and doubt , hesitation and commitment.

My source of inspiration comes from memory and subconscious which is rearticulated into my own visual language . It stretches my investigation of ideas into solitude, symbolism of thought and the human condition"
