Sacrificial Animals, Squirrel ::
Devra Wiseman / UK
"I believe that art should be seen to be clearly rooted in its time but that it can transcend its particular culture and place, to touch people directly. " says Devra
Her work has therefore always engaged with current issues while reflecting on the age-old human passions that still drive us. The series, Sacrificial Animals, as its name implies, brings to mind ancient traditions of the scapegoat and animal sacrifices of the past, but these paintings locate the sacrifice of the innocent in the tragedies of the present day. In so many countries the innocent are sacrificed to some cause, whether by intent or because they are unfortunately in the line of fire – collateral damage as it is brutally put.
As part of Devra's insistence on integrating the past with the present, she uses apparently traditional painterly techniques, while basing the images on computer manipulation of images. Sacrificial Animals also is based on her digital manipulation of images, to produce the broken forms that she has embodied in paint.
