Becoming Abstraction ::
Maria B. Davis / USA

For as long as I can remember, making art has not only been an essential, but an imperative part my life. At a young age I learned that words don't adequately express what my imagination wants to describe.

My favorite media to work with has been in the digital realm. Since the early 1990's I have been creating with computers, beginning as a graphic designer and now in my personal artwork. My work is an expression of my spiritual connection to the world around me, many times containing bits of my life in photographic form.

For me, photos are very direct and concrete, catching "micro-moments" in time that quickly pass and can easily be forgotten if not documented. I enjoy digital photography because the media's immediacy affords me the time to review and quickly decide my visual direction. They are documents of my life through my eyes and my spirit.

The montages I create come from digital photographs I have taken. Using these photos I digitally cut, crop and alter them. Most times I do not have a set idea of what will materialize, letting the photos determine the direction I should take. The result is a multi-layered work consisting of my visual thoughts and emotions.
