Gallery comment :: Munteanu's sure eye, hand and refined use of the transparent pastel effects of watercolor to represent this "found" object, relegates this rusty hinge to a sort of little "jewel", and prompted the juror to suggest this well deserved Merit Award.

Artist Statement: Leyla Aysel Munteanu, born in Hunedoara, Romania in 1967 moved to Canada in 1998.  “I am essentially a self-taught artist, claiming this as a career in 2001. I learned to draw and paint by trying to reproduce Renaissance masters’ artworks, reading books and studying art magazines, but it wasn’t enough, and in 2004 I started a BFA program at University of Windsor, Windsor On, Canada, and I intend to go further for MFA.”

Leyla's artwork is the reflection of everything interesting around her at a certain moment in time. Vibrancy, color and emotion…the potential being there to add her own unique and personal touch. The artist is essentially changing reality, through his or her own philosophy and skills, learned over time through mistakes and hard work, and the result--a real thing becomes… perhaps, unreal?
