There are many ways to live. There are many ways to paint.
I consider my paintings as a mirror that reflects my daily adventures, including mini-adventures like commuting, shopping and even the tea time with my friends.
Since early 2000, my works have involved the creation of conceptually based ancient Asian icons on the screen panels.
In 2001, I began painting animals and tradition-costumed Asian ladies as a metaphor that deconstructs my cultural base and childhood. I've also given them a situation that addresses a socio-political perspective, the fragility of dreams that I 've pursued, my emotional isolation of where I am. Often times these themes are translated into several different visual languages. The golden background color establishes a dream-like surreal quality, suggests notions of peace and ambiguity. The act of figures and animal characters provide clues to subject matter.
I began the series "Flying Fish" in late 2002. I started this painting with acrylic on the raw canvas, but I felt the acrylic wasn't the perfect medium for this painting, so I 've started to experiment with extract green tea and instant coffee as a alternative medium. The fabric that I used on the side panel is the replicated traditional Chinese fabric that I found in San Francisco China town. The background gold color created with several layer of oil paint with mixture of glitters and Asian pigments.
Born and raised in Seoul, Korea, I have always felt the need to represent my cultural background. I have progressed from viewing the world through self centered narrowed glasses to seeing the influence of the "both" side of culture.
I came to Unites States in 2001, and currently working as a painter at Lucas Film in California.
