digital photo with computer manipulations

Artist Statement ::

One of South Africa’s most intriguing artists, Errol Westoll creates constant interaction between positive and negative spaces, setting up tensions across the picture plane. His pictures demand observer participation, drawing on one’s own feelings and inner self in individual interpretation. His use of colour and space create dimensions, which suggest countless alternatives, establishing yet further sources of tension and excitement. “To me, art, whether painting or photography, is about exploration – of the art object or image and of self.

Painting. I enjoy oil paint: the brush working its way across the canvas, the textures, profoundly the colours – how they work together, stimulate each other, the sensuality of it all.”

Photography. “With my photography I enjoy the excitement of crazy juxtapositions and of capturing the beauty of everyday scenes or objects which are usually taken for granted and isolating them so that they demand attention and recognition. Lomography and computer graphics allow the manipulation of the art form, taking it to a new dimension.

Photographix. I do not have access to a printing press or screenprint facilities, yet I wish to express myself through graphic images. The computer provides a perfect creative tool for this purpose using digital imaging processes. Digital photography has opened up a whole new world to both amateur and professional photographers. People who have never really considered the medium as a means of expressing themselves are now using computer software to experiment with images they have captured. All of these images are carefully considered and constructed. Just as in any fine art medium, some "work" others don't. The ones that I eventually offer the viewer in editions of 10 or 25, printed using archival inks and paper are those that I believe work as graphic images.
